The Donkey
"The Donkey" was the Dayasagar Health Service's first ambulance and has been in operation since November of 2010. Since July of 2011 this vehicle has been enrolled in a government program called Matri Yaan. Seeking to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity rates, the Government of India provides free transport vouchers to pregnant mothers after they have had 3 antenatal check ups at a regional health post. This voucher entitles the mother to transport to and from the Government Hospital at the time as birth as well as emergency transport for the newborn during the first month of life. The Donkey is stationed at the Government Primary Health Center in Git Dubling, Kalimpong Sub-Division, Darjeeling District of West Bengal. The vehicle is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
